The Marquis of Lasson.

In the 18th century, he lived a cultivated Parisian life, shaped by salons, ideas and duty.

Then came loss.
The death of his wife changed everything.

He left Paris and withdrew to Lasson, in Normandy.
Here, silence replaced society. Stone and land replaced the city.

One day, a letter arrived.
Then another.

A young nun wrote of being forced into a convent, pleading for help.
Moved, the Marquis listened. He replied. He offered his support.

He did not know the story was a fiction, imagined by Denis Diderot.
But his compassion was real.

Without realizing it, he became the heart of La Religieuse.

In the 18th century, Denis Diderot decided to play a literary prank on a close friend:
the Marquis de Croismare, a highly respected Norman nobleman. Diderot invented a young cloistered nun, Suzanne, who begged the Marquis to help her escape the convent.
This fictional story would later become the novel The Nun (La Religieuse). Touched by the suffering he thought was real, the Marquis wrote back, gave advice, and tried to organize her rescue. Even today, the echo of this story seems to linger within the château.
A meeting between the spirit of the Enlightenment and the gentle calm of the Norman countryside.
